Birth Control - Cervical Cap

birth control cervical cap

Cervical Cap is a barrier form of birth control. It fits over the cervix and blocks the sperm from entering the uterus.

Wash your hands prior to using the cervical cap. You insert the cervical cap right before intercourse and foreplay. Use spermicide with the cervical cap to make it more effective. And leave it in place for 6 hours (up to 48 hours) after intercourse. The woman must be fitted for these so you will need to see your doctor if you would like to use one.

You may need to sterilize the cap, so read the instructions. The caps usually last for 1 to 2 years.

How Reliable is It?

There are several kinds of cervical caps from different manufacturers, so this is a rough estimate. This is the rate for use with spermicide.

With perfect use the rate is 74% - 91% effective.

With typical use the rate is 68% - 85% effective.

Most women find the cervical cap to increase pain and discomfort during sex for both partners.
