Birth Control - Depo-Provera

Depo-Provera (Depo) is a hormonal based birth control, progestogen-only. The drug is injected every 3 months. It does not prevent STI/STD's.

How Reliable Is It?

With perfect use the rate is 99.7% effective.

With typical use the rate is 97% effective.

How Does It Work?

Depo works by inhibiting follicular development and prevents ovulation. The progestogen-only drus is injected every 12 weeks. You need to book a follow up appointment with your doctor every 12 weeks, so you can receive the next dose.

Side Effects

  • Irregular or unpredictable menstral bleeding or spotting
  • Fertility when off the drug is delayed (usually 9 - 10 months)
  • Increased risk of Breast Cancer
  • Babies exposed to it during pregnancy may have a low birth weight and the possibility of early death
  • Bone loss
  • Weight changes
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Nervousness
  • Weakness or Fatigue
