Birth Control - NuvaRing

Birth Control - NuvaRing

NuvaRing is the name for a contraceptive vaginal ring, it is a hormonal birth control. This is available by prescription only, it releases low doses of progestin and estrogen over a 3 week period. The ring is placed up near the cervix. It does not protect against STI/STDs.

How Reliable Is It?

With perfect use the rate is 99% effective.

With typical use the rate is 98% - 99% effective.

How Does It Work?

NuvaRing works by inserting the ring into the vagina for 3 weeks and then is removed for 1 week. Generally the ring will stay in place during sexual intercourse and physical activity as it is held in by the muscles of the vagina, however, it is possible for it to fall out after anything strenuous. If the ring does fall out, be sure to put it back within 3 hours, other wise the effeciency of the ring will be compromised. If you do not replace it within 3 hours a second method of contraception must be used for the next 7 days.
