Birth Control - Tubal Ligation
Tubal Ligation, or "getting your tubes tied", is a permanent form of birth control, it can not be undone. It is most commonly done in women who do not want any more children. The fallopian tubes are severed, pinched or sealed shut. Your hormones, menstrual cycle and libido can be affected by the procedure. This does not offer any protection against STD/STIs.

How Does It Work?
There are many approaches the doctor can take. They can go through the vagina, near the belly button (abdominal wall), or right after a cesarean. Tubal ligation can be done under local or general anesthesia, it it is after childbirth they will use spinal/epidural methods.
This is usually a day procedure and you probably won't need to spend the night at the hospital. While tubal ligation is a reliable method, nothing is guaranteed. It is possible for the tubes to try to heal themselves which will increase your chances of pregnancy.
Tubal ligation is supposed to be permanent, but in some cases it can be reversed. However, once you have gotten tubal ligation done it is very hard to reverse it and frequently there isn't enough fallopian tube left to reconnect after they have cut the damaged tissue out. The procedure needs to be done by a micro surgeon. As technology advances, the possibility for reversal becomes better.
