Can I Pass CMV To My New Partner?

Just a quick question. If I was recently diagosed with a CMV infection and have taken antibiotics, would I still pass on this virus to my new partner, as I was told there is no cure for CMV. Many thanks if you could help.

Answer

I suggest you see your doctor for complete information regarding the infection. They will be able to help you far more then I can. While there are sometimes physical symptoms that you can see (which is when people think they are contagious) but the truth is, even without these symptoms you can still pass it on to your partner. The antibiotics may have gotten rid of the symptoms but you still have the infection, so it can still be passed along at anytime.

Talk to your new partner about the situation, that way both of you can make an informed decision on what you would like to do. Do use protection like condoms and look into the female condom, that might be the way to go. Other birth controls that are not barrier methods will not prevent the transmission of the disease. There are online support groups that you can go to, I'm sure they can also offer advice, but your doctor is the best bet. If you doctor isn't giving you the information you need, find a better doctor. They may be able to offer medications that will lessen your chance of passing it on.
